Now my iMac had been on for at least 3 days, it had been shutdown, restarted, and had been fine. Do I wipe the drive and start again? If it went wrong I would have no backup. From a month ago stored safe on a 1TB External HDD. I had one more option my only TimeMachine backup left. Now I Panicked! For about 3 days I tried to get my iMac to backup to my NAS (WD My Book Live 3TB) drive, it was slow and twice I managed to interrupt it making it start again. In the mean time I discovered that somehow my wife had managed to delete my TimeMachine backup from our NAS drive. I uninstalled LogMeIn and everything seemed fine.

4MOT/4/40000003: HDD – 1231, I tested again, this time the same code but the last digit changed. In the mean time I fired up AHT (Apple Hardware Test) and under the extended test it came up with an error. One person replied, and suggested removing the Apps: LogMeIn and Parallels. Still my iMac panicked! So I write a post on the Apple Discussion pages. But the iMac was done and installing OS X.

No problem they say.Īmsys Engineer phoned to quote me for a new Optical Drive – £110 plus the VAT – told him to jog on. It is Friday afternoon (10 th May), so can they pick it up Monday (13 th May)? Please could the engineer phone me and quote for a new Optical Drive? Mind hasn’t worked for a year or more. 10 minutes later Amsys based in Surrey (UK) phone me, they want to pick it up. Yeah turns out the HDD Replacement Program ended 2 weeks ago, but, as they can confirm I never had the email asking for the recall, they would replace my HDD, someone would phone me today, arrange to pick it up and take it away. 2 ½ minutes later he comes back to apologises for taking so long, he was talking to the supervisor and will be back shortly. No less than 30 seconds later Willie from Apple USA phoned me! We discussed the Kernel Panic and was it part of the HDD Replacement Program? Was my Seagate 1TB drive shafted? He expected so, off he went, “You’ll be on hold 2 minutes,” he promised. But there was an option for a HDD Replacement Program – what is that I wondered? So I clicked it and filed a support ticket. I looked at Apple Support – there isn’t any unless you pay them money. So my theory is this – if the Mac will boot in Safe Mode and run off a USB stick then it must be the OS is corrupt or a HDD fault.

Installed Mac OS X on to a USB stick and boot – hmmm okay. Remove all external stuff – still the same. I try the simple stuff – remove RAM – reseat – still the same. As soon as Mac OS loads into my account it glitches. On my return I turn on my iMac and it glitches – the display is funny, pixels all over the place, sections missing, sections of display over others. She Kernel Panicked! So what is a Kernel Panic? I’m still not sure, a conflict it shuts the system down and gives a report – that only a true Apple Geek understands. So I was watching videos from the Korn website.

Korn are in the studio making a new album after “Head – The God Squad” returned. So I crawled down the stairs and turned on my iMac before work. On 8 th May 2013 I was on call and was out until 4am.
